RuneScape takes place in the world of Gielinor, a medieval fantasy realm divided into different kingdoms, regions, and cities. Players can travel throughout Gielinor via a number of methods including on foot, magical spells, or charter ships.Each region offers different types of monsters, resources, and quests to challenge players. Players are represented in the game with customisable avatars. RuneScape does not follow a linear storyline; rather, players set their own goals and objectives. Players can choose to fight non-player character (NPC) monsters, complete quests, or increase their experience in the available skills. Players interact with each other through trading, chatting, or by participating in mini-games and activities, some of which are competitive or combative in nature, while others require cooperative or collaborative play.
 
Runescape does what every amazing game should do: iron out bugs and glitches, smoothen the gameplay and graphics, while continually offering new content to improve the already incredible game. And to think this masterpiece is actually browser-based. For players of Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, Runescape would feel very familiar –point-and-click gameplay, the default isometric view, numerous different locales, and dozens of hours of gameplay. Then, you'll reconsider the thought... Runescape isn't as similar as these games! Runescape is an entirely different gaming universe! Within the first few minutes (or hours), you'll find that this game stands tall on it own as a fun MMO with an amazing story and unique gameplay.
 
At the moment, Internet Explorer doesn't support WebGL. However, early beta versions of IE11, which is due out with Windows 8.1 (Blue) does have WebGL, although how good its support is remains to be seen. Operating system support is also important. Mansell told us that Runescape 3 runs well under Windows and Mac OS using Chrome, but Linux WebGL support isn't as good. Finally, hardware support is vital for WebGL. Nvidia graphics cards offer the best support at the moment, with Jagex working on getting AMD hardware up to speed before the final launch. For older hardware that doesn't support WebGL, there's a legacy Java client still available.
 
RuneScape has over two dozen skills for you to explore (with membership required to use all of them). You’ll increase your proficiency with each skill as you use it (chopping trees for example improves your woodcutting while starting a fire  improves your fire skill). The max skill level for these skills is 99 with players receiving a cape of accomplishment when they achieve the max level, which makes this a common goal for most players. Because players can choose which skills to focus on you have plenty of depth that ensures you and your friend can have completely different skills levelled up and thus approach to gameplay.
 
It's nice to know that some things in Runescape haven't changed over the years. The map of the world is still the same, and you can go to Varrock and visit the Exchange to sell some goods and buy some. Lumbridge is still the 'home' spot in the game where you're likely to start. I know in the 'old school' days of Runescape some might associate it with 'spammers' and 'hackers'. The staff of Runescape have done a great job in limiting this stuff. I remember having my chat spammed all the time in the old school edition, and now you don't really get that anymore. They handle it very quickly, and you can report it as well.
 
When you first enter the world of RuneScape, it’s best to remember that the entire game has been developed to run through an Internet browser. That said, the graphics in RuneScape are incredibly basic, with character that are a cross between a LEGO mini figure and the style of Asheron’s Call in the late 90s. While that sounds a bit harsh, it isn’t entirely intended to be. While the presentation may be slightly drab, it’s not jarring to the eyes and that’s all that matters in game that’s meant to be played on a variety of computers. To be honest, the graphics don’t take away from the gameplay in RuneScape at all, and visually are not harsh on the eyes.
