It’s time to shake up the world of competitive card games and Chronicle is doing just that with the launch of its open beta today. Chronicle is all about survival of the smartest and it’s the PvP-meets-PvE questing that gives Chronicle a competitive core, making a fun mechanic into a truly compelling evolution of the genre.
For those of you who missed out last article about this game, Chronicle: RuneScape Legends is a strategy card game (as known as a CCG) which takes place in the RuneScape universe. RuneScape Legends was shown at RuneFest to a positive response and now Jagex are now opening the game up to a large audience by running the closed beta. With a lot to offer, stunning 3D visuals and a range of gameplay options available to players to build the best desk, Chronicle: RuneScape Legends looks to be Jagex next hit.
The concept and how it plays out is actually pretty interesting. Since Chronicle's inception, we've been committed to iterative, agile development. Now, as we prepare for Chronicle entering closed beta next month, we're incredibly excited to open the game up to more RuneScape fans and those looking for something new to join us in creating something special. In taking the game to the next stage, and welcoming input from a much wider audience, we believe we can create a surprising and genuinely unique experience for all gamers. Before starting any match you're presented with a selection of "Legends" to pick from.
The Legends system is basically choosing which character you want to be, and at the moment there are only four on offer; The Raptor, Linza, Ariane, and Ozan. Some RuneScape fans may recognise these names, with the characters pulled directly from RuneScape lore, and each has their own benefits and costs depending on their respective characteristics. The colours are vibrant and fit brilliantly, and the music is enchanting and calm when it needs to be, but boisterous and exciting during battle. Both the audio and video elements blend seamlessly with the fantasy atmosphere that Chronicle has adopted, and overall it's a very pleasant experience.
For people that maybe don't know RuneScape, they offer a completely different visual aesthetic to the board game that you'll be interacting with, also in the future we'll be adding gameplay to that as well. So you randomly encounter the different pages that you come across, the locations, and each one of those locations in the future will have their own card with them as well. One of the aspects that makes this new project stick out from the crowd is how the cards within the game are implemented; the primary difference from most CCG games is that the cards you place have a direct effect on you, rather than your opponent.
Jagex wanted to make a game based around the idea that rather than developing a character to go on a quest, you develop a quest for your character to journey through, and each Chapter is an entry into a new mini-adventure that you're creating anew every time. With each Legend having their own characteristics and play styles, the depth and complex strategies and tactics that are on offer to players within Chronicle: RuneScape Legends.
