Some game skills about Runescape games

RuneScape Legends is a collectable card game based on the massively popular, free-to-play browser based MMO. RuneScape launched in 2001, has boasted an incredible — in fact, Guinness record holding — 200 million accounts, so it might not be unreasonable to expect that Chronicle has a built-in audience of fans. Jagex is set to unleash a new challenger to Hearthstone and they’re looking to shake things up with Chronicle: RuneScape Legends. From the studio best known as the creator of pop-culture legend RuneScape, comes an action-packed card game that actually sees you fight your own cards in a quest for supremacy over your rival.

This isn’t Hearthstone; this isn’t Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh or even Pokémon. This is Chronicle, and almost every predictable mechanic in card games has been thrown out the window in favor of Chronicle’s unique twist on the genre. Runescape Legends is set to be the latest card collection brawler seeking supremacy in the RPG sub-genre. Having enjoyed a successful closed beta back at the end of 2015, the dates for the game’s open beta have now been confirmed by developer Jagex. It's all card games all the time today, as Jagex have also launched their deck'n'draw-based MMO spinoff Chronicle: RuneScape Legends into closed beta this week.

It uses an indirect form of one vs. one battles where your deck is filled with challenges for your own hero, which then give them buffs or deal damage to opponents before a final direct fight at the end of the chronicle. Take a turn in Hearthstone and you’ll be using mana points to play cards from your hand, directing your minions in play to attack the opposing cards, and ultimately try to deal damage directly to your opponent. Chronicle, turns this on its head, so that instead of battling your opponent directly, your hero is adventuring and fighting against the cards in your own deck.

Each turn takes place across two pages in a magical tome, with environments and locations from the RuneScape universe popping into existence for you to adventure across. It borrows from the look and feel of a board game, so that while you and your opponent sit across from one another on the table, you’re represented in this game by figures on model bases. That’s been really exciting for us. We’ve only really started talking about it in a lot of detail over the last couple of days, actually.

What we want to do is root Chronicle into Runescape. The game’s actually based within a part of the world called the Legends Guild, and we’re building a new part of that, which is going to be the Hall of Legends, which is where Chronicles is going to be stored. We’re going to be bringing it out across the game world as well. We’ve got lots of cool ideas, and we’re going to be working with the community as well, to see what they’d like with Chronicle within Runescape.

Although the developers are counting on players having some nostalgia for the MMO, familiarity with the parent game and its standard issue fantasy denizens is not necessary for playing or enjoying Chronicle. Some experience playing CCGs such as Magic: The Gathering or Hearthstone might, however, give the player some insight into how Chronicle is attempting to change at least a few of the now-accepted rules of the genre.
