Today marks the launch of an experimental new version of RuneScape, one which none of you likely saw coming. DarkScape, as it has been called, is a new version of RuneScape with a twist. Unlike its relatively safe counterpart, everywhere in DarkScape is open for player vs player combat. You can be attacked at any time, at any point in the world, including places that used to be safe zones in RuneScape’s PvP worlds (banks). DarkScape is available for download and in browser for free from the RuneScape website. Jagex plans to bring new content not found in vanilla RuneScape over the next couple months.
 
DarkScape differs from vanilla RuneScape because it allows for something known as “Wilderness rules”to be active over the entire map. In vanilla RuneScape, players can only kill other players in an area known as the Wilderness, or Wildy, that covers most of the northern part of the world map. Because you drop your items when you die in RuneScape, the Wilderness is almost always home to only high level, well prepared players, and is a death trap for any one who finds themselves there without proper preparation. RuneScape fans, and those interested in trying Darkscape, can play now. All players start at level 1, so new players won’t be walking into a lions den. Jagex wanted to try “something new”with DarkScape, something “not possible in RuneScape.”
 
Jagex Games Studio, creators and custodians of the fantasy MMORPG, RuneScape, is proud to announce the PC launch of DarkScape, a cutthroat and fresh twist on the deadly player versus player (PvP) sandbox experience set in a shadowy, alternate game universe. DarkScape is entirely free-to-play and includes areas of Gielinor usually reserved for members in the main RuneScape game. Featuring a surprising and treacherous world divided into low, mid and high-risk regions, each with their own economy, players will have to decide how deep they travel into zones of maximum threat, where valuable resources and high-level content can be claimed. In a game where the line between friend and foe immeasurably blurs, players will have to watch their backs yet work together to protect trade routes, hold resource plots, and form into bandit groups.
 
Even Gielinor’s cities, highly-protected citadels of commerce in DarkScape, aren’t safe from PvP skirmishes. However, the further away from these rare ‘safe areas’, the more likely players will have to fight for their loot - and their lives. The Bank system in DarkScape is considerably different from the main RuneScape bank. Banks contain 3 static tabs for each of the three risk areas. Each of these tabs items can only be accessed in their respective threat area, but all tabs can be viewed in any area. Players wishing to transfer resources between regions must do so by either buying them from the Grand Exchange in that region or alternatively by carrying the resources across regions in their inventory and risk getting attacked by other players. Banks also do not heal players.
 
One selling point for DarkScape is that for the first time ever the fabled “members”areas of the RuneScape overworld will be available to any player, even without a membership subscription. Playing DarkScape will be many gamers first foray into the once exclusive areas, as the monthly cost may have dissuaded them in the past.
