RuneScape Legends is a collectable card game based on the massively popular, free-to-play browser based MMO. RuneScape launched in 2001, has boasted an incredible — in fact, Guinness record holding — 200 million accounts, so it might not be unreasonable to expect that Chronicle has a built-in audience of fans. Although the developers are counting on players having some nostalgia for the MMO, familiarity with the parent game and its standard issue fantasy denizens is not necessary for playing or enjoying Chronicle.

For RuneScape players first coming into the game there'll be a lot there to really enjoy about [it], especially nostalgic players coming back to the universe, experiencing cards and characters from years gone by. But the most important thing about the game is the statistics, the cards, the spells, the stats on them; all of those things are brand new for Chronicle. And so if you're coming to the game as a non-RuneScape player, you're still going to be learning at the same pace as the RuneScape player. So there's no advantage from being a RuneScape player.

Runescape Legends is set in Gielinor, the world in which most of Runescape takes place. The collectible card game was announced this weekend, at RuneFest, and will enable fans of the MMORPG (and all the other card game enthusiasts, of course) to engage in some miniature role-playing game adventures in single-player, as well as in grueling multiplayer combat. You'd be forgiven for thinking Chronicle was Runescape's answer to Hearthstone. It's a collectible card game where you build decks for RuneScape characters, play minions, equip weapons, and compete against opponents in ten minute matches.

Yet even with these elements, Chronicle feels fresh and new. It manages to subtly twist the systems we've seen in multiple CCGs into a unique narrative experience - one I didn't want to stop playing even after my brief time playing. Each character has a particular method of winning this test of wits, be it the mage Ariane with direct-damage spells, the smith Raptor who likes building and spending armor, the thief Ozan who steals whatever he can from his rival, and the vampire Vanescula who drains health like it's going out of style.

It will be your objective to impede your rival's main strategy, perhaps even taking your opponent's character out before reaching the last battle. Played out within the pages of a living book the game focuses on quest building, allowing players to craft their own miniature RPGs against enemies, including classic RuneScape boss monsters, before entering into tense PvP combat," the official description of the game reads. With Jagex already having a huge fanbase thanks to its highly popular MMORPG RuneScape still going strong and garnering millions of players, it's no surprise that its new project, Chronicle: RuneScape Legends, has already started gathering a significant amount of chatter in its own right.
